Prep for AP Computer Science A (Java)

Wichita's premier coding academy offering elite, university-level mentorship tailored for high school success.

High schoolers and parents/guardians: our prep class will help your student to:

  • Thrive in the AP CS A classroom.
  • Achieve excellence through proactive preparation and deep comprehension.
  • Build a solid structural foundation for their future in STEM.
  • Move far beyond rote syntax memorization.
  • Learn to think systematically like a computer scientist.
  • Ace the AP exam and build real computational thinking skills that last a lifetime.

Who Is This Course For?

High schoolers who would like to learn programming, or those planning to take (or currently enrolled in) AP CS A.

Feel free to choose Session 1 (The Head Start), Session 2 (The School-Year Lifeline), or maximize your success by enrolling in both.

Session 1. The Head Start (Pre-Semester Jumpstart)

Don’t walk into your AP CS A class unprepared. Java can be unforgiving if it's your first programming language. Spend the weeks before the semester starts building a rock-solid mental model of code, control flow, and object-oriented thinking so day one of school feels like a casual review.

  • Duration: Four weeks (40 hours in total).
  • Cost: $1,200 flat rate.

Session 2. The School-Year Coding Explained

AP Computer Science A in regular classrooms moves incredibly fast, and it’s easy to fall behind once Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and 2D arrays hit. We provide deep-dive weekly support, clarifying complex classroom topics, debugging stuck assignments, and ensuring you never feel lost.

  • Duration: Full academic year. Students typically spend 2 hours per week attending classes, and an additional 2 to 4 hours per week on homework and projects.
  • Cost: $200 to $400 per month (depending on registered weekly hours; structured tiers provided upon checkout).
  • Bundle Bonus: Students who register for both sessions receive a 10% monthly discount on Session 2.

Exam score-based rebates are also available! (See details in the Rebate section below).

Our Core Difference: The "Glass Box" Approach

Why Traditional AP Prep Fails (and How We Are Different)

Most AP prep programs focus entirely on syntax and test-taking tricks. Students learn what to type, but not why it works, leading to severe frustration when faced with complex Free Response Questions (FRQs).

At Wichita Coding Academy, we open up the "black box" of coding. We teach using a Glass Box methodology:

  • Visualizing Execution: We use visual state machines and mental mapping to track exactly how variables, references, and objects move through computer memory.
  • From Abstract to Tangible: We turn dry, abstract Java concepts into intuitive, concrete models.
  • Code Auditing & Debugging: We don't just teach you how to write code; we teach you how to read, critique, and debug it like a seasoned engineer.

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum maps directly to the College Board AP Computer Science A framework, while adding the deep engineering concepts missed by standard textbooks.

  • Module 1: Primitive Types & Objects — Understanding variables, memory allocation, and the foundational building blocks of Java.
  • Module 2: Program Flow — Boolean expressions, if-statements, and mastering the loops (for, while) that drive logic.
  • Module 3: Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) — Designing classes, understanding inheritance, polymorphism, and how objects interact.
  • Module 4: Data Structures — Deep dive into Array, ArrayList, and 2D Arrays—the core of the AP exam's coding challenges.
  • Module 5: Advanced Logic & Recursion — Conquering the most feared topic on the exam by visualizing the call stack step-by-step.
  • Module 6: AP Exam Strategy & FRQ Mastery — Deconstructing past Free Response Questions and mastering multiple-choice pacing.

Meet Your Instructor

Led by an Independent Computer Science Professor

Classes are led by university educators with advanced degrees in computer science, coupled with extensive experience in teaching and curriculum development.

With years of experience teaching core programming to hundreds of college students and mentoring young engineers, we know exactly where students typically get stuck, why standard textbooks fail, and how to bridge the gap between high school AP classes and university-level software engineering.

Flexible Enrollment Options

Choose the track that fits your schedule:

  • Format: Intensive small-group sessions before the school year begins.
  • Goal: Build a massive head start, covering the first 30-40% of the AP curriculum before school starts.
  • Ideal for: Students wanting to reduce their school-year stress and guarantee an A.

Session 2: The School-Year Coaching Program

  • Format: Weekly evening or weekend sessions running concurrently with the academic calendar.
  • Goal: Align with your high school syllabus, offering homework support, concept reinforcement, and targeted exam prep.
  • Ideal for: Students currently enrolled in AP CS A who want an expert guide to ensure top marks and deep understanding.

Our "Skin-in-the-Game" Promise: The Accomplishment Rebate

We believe that great education shouldn't just be passively consumed—it should inspire. True joy in learning comes from the thrill of hard work paying off.

Because we have absolute confidence in our Glass Box methodology and our track record of helping students master complex logic, we are putting our money where our mouth is. We don’t just want you to invest in us; we want to invest right back in your success.

If you enroll in and complete our full AP Prep course (Session 2), your final exam score dictates your final tuition:

Your AP Exam Score Your Cash-Back Rebate
Score a 5 $300 Rebate
Score a 4 $200 Rebate
Score a 3 $100 Rebate

Why do we do this?

  • Shared Goals: We want our students to treat this with joy and commitment. When you win, we win.
  • Healthy Motivation: It transforms the stress of the AP Exam into an exciting, reward-driven milestone.
  • Unmatched Value: You get elite, university-level instruction from a CS professor for the ultimate net price of a basic online video course—if you put in the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior programming experience? No! While a basic introduction to coding (like Python) is helpful, this course is designed to take motivated students from absolute beginners to advanced Java programmers. We build the fundamentals from the ground up.

How does this help with the actual AP Exam score? By truly understanding how Java works under the hood, the AP exam becomes significantly easier. Students who understand the underlying logic don't get tripped up by tricky multiple-choice questions or unexpected Free Response Questions' (FRQ) prompts. We include focused test-taking strategies and real past-exam practice as the test approaches.

How does the Accomplishment Rebate work? It’s simple. You pay the standard course tuition upfront. Once the College Board releases the official AP Exam scores in July, just send us a screenshot of your official score report, and Wichita Coding Academy will cut you a check or issue a direct refund for your rebate amount within 7 business days. No hoops, no red tape—just a reward for your excellence.

Is this class in-person or online? We offer highly interactive small-group sessions at our East Wichita facility, ensuring personalized attention and local, human mentorship for every student.
